Manipulating the blend modes
One of Photoshop’s many capabilities is that you can take an image and apply a new _blend mode._ A blend mode can affect the way the underlying pixels of an image come together. I explain all the blend modes in detail in this chapter, but first, let me introduce you to the ‘glossy’ tool in Photoshop.
When you add the ‘glossy’ tool to an image, you can use the points and the number of points to create more advanced image effects. You can now control the ‘glossiness’ of an image by applying these special blend modes.
The ‘glossy’ tool uses the four ‘glossy’ blend modes, which are as follows:
* **Mode 1: Screen:** Creates a screen. A screen is the bottom layer of an image, and when you apply the screen blend mode, what’s underneath the screen appears — as if it’s a mirror.
Applying this blend mode results in the appearance of the colors on the top layers blending with those on the bottom layers, and the colors appear to be reversed. The colors on the bottom layers appear to shine through to the ones on the top layers.
You don’t necessarily have to use this mode — you can add other effects to produce different results. Just choose the option you need and click OK to apply it.
* **Mode 2: Multiply:** The Multiply blend mode is the opposite of the Screen blend mode. In other words, when you apply Multiply, what’s underneath the screen is multiplied by the colors on the bottom layer.
You find the Multiply blend mode on its own in the ‘paint’ tool or the’spatter’ tool if you’ve selected a preset from the spatter brush.
