Basic Photoshop Editing
When you first open Photoshop, it displays an image called the Photoshop Tools palette. This palette provides a way to access and display all of the program’s tools. One of the tools is a brush: It represents a paint-like tool that enables you to alter an image using the paintbrush. You can use the brush to paint over other objects in the image, and then edit the resulting layer.
Although the brush is the most common tool, there are many other tools, too. The biggest difference among the tools is whether they create a new layer when you activate them or make the existing objects visible. In the following steps, I walk you through the process of using the paintbrush to change the hue of a filter layer.
To modify a layer, you must have a layer called something like Filter, as I show you in the upcoming section “Creating a Hue Layer.”

To edit a layer, select the Layer box in the Layers panel.
You see the option to lock the layers, as shown in Figure 3-1. The Lock option makes the layer layer so that you can’t modify it. The Lock button changes to a key (backslash) lock. If you’re an experienced Photoshop user, you may notice that the Lock button is actually in a different place on the palette. Clicking the Lock button, you’ll notice that the menu changes, and you can choose one of the other lock states, as shown in Figure 3-2.

Using the brush to change colors
You can use the paintbrush tool to paint a color — with any color in your image — or you can paint over an existing color to alter it. To paint over an existing color, follow these steps:
1. Click the paintbrush tool to activate it, and then move the mouse pointer over the image
