“We can’t keep on borrowing $1.6 billion a month for the next 30 years. We’re in debt $23 trillion. … We can’t keep on borrowing more money. That’s why we need a balanced budget amendment.”
The plan would require more than $2 billion in private investment and another $1.9 billion in state bond financing to build a new, parallel span over San Francisco Bay, connecting a pair of redevelopment zones on either side of San Francisco’s iconic toll span.
“It’s totally crazy,” he said. “That project should have been done decades ago. It makes absolutely no sense.”
The new bridge was one of the biggest priorities of Gov. Jerry Brown and city officials when they secured approval to redevelop the Concord Technology Park and the parcel surrounding the 1.4-mile-long span.
The former automotive parts manufacturer was shuttered in 2004, and the newly constructed, 15-lane, tube-shaped bridge was used as a test for a system of seismic-detonation chambers, as was the case at Concord’s River Road.
