Is it OK to use a long function name, but all that goes in the body is terse and cryptic?
Assuming I don’t want to scare people away because I’m writing a short, fast-learning piece of code, is it OK to use a long function name that has a clearly defined API?

No, it’s not OK. It should be very short, since short functions are easier to read and understand.
To give an example, here is a C++ function named findFirst:

That’s the point, readability. It’s something you can’t deny, and if you do, you’re asking for trouble.
Consider, for example, the only more verbose function named findLast, which seems to be even longer than yours and does nothing at all except iterating over the range from 0 to the size of the vector:
