We had one hour at the movies and here was a chance to vent our deepest, darkest fancies. Talk then! How did we do? DISCUSSION TOPIC: Tone – the sound of the movie. For me the musical score and then the sound effects were just about perfect. The opening shot, the scene on the St. Moritz ski slopes, the Chatterbox scene and the scene with Carrie and the footballers – all of them had an exceptional voice and I loved it.

I thought it was a well balanced mix. The Sound of Music was not a perfect film (it was dramatized somewhat) but what you did do was that you went into the film by the ear and you carried the film away with you. I for one never minded that, at least not from an entertainment aspect. The special effects weren’t bad either. I thought the opening title theme got some good echo from the foothills.

Now that I think about it, the perfect musical sound used on The Sound of Music was provided by the opening song when the family sing ‘Santa Lucia’s Got a Cracker in Her Stockings’. It has taken me a long time to realize this but every time I watch that song I hear Alan-Burt’s voice in it. Even the corny strings that accompany it have great emotion. There were a couple of songs that I didn’t care
