How to launch Photoshop via the command line

To use the Photoshop API from the command line, you first need to launch Photoshop.

You can type the following in a terminal to launch Photoshop (Mac):

/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6

/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CS6

The desktop icon on macOS still launches the regular Photoshop program.

You can also launch Photoshop through the command line by typing:

/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6/Contents/MacOS/Photoshop\ –help

Make sure to keep the double quotes around the file location so that the filename stays as the first argument to Photoshop instead of being passed off to the shell as is typical with a single-quoted string.

To test that the command path works, just open a terminal and type the following and press Enter, then close the terminal:

/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6

The specified path does not exist

This shouldn’t happen, but if it does then you’ll need to check your command path.

If you’re using Photoshop CC on macOS then typing the following will launch Photoshop CC:

/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CC\ 2018\ CS6/Contents/MacOS/Photoshop\ –version

Image editing using Photoshop

Step 1. Open your image in Photoshop

If you have an image that is saved on your computer as a file, first you must open it using Photoshop Elements. It is quicker to open an image this way, rather than by dragging it from Windows Explorer.

On your keyboard, press the ALT key and click on the image.

You should now see the standard Photoshop window.

Step 2. Load your image

Click on the “File” menu and select “Open”.

You will see a dialog box like the one below.

Click “Open” on the right.

You should now have an “Image” in your workspace.

Step 3. Clean up your image

You will notice that your image is full of different colors. This is what we call the color balance. There are different ways to get rid of this effect, but here are two that work well. This will help make your image more attractive.

Click on the “Fill” menu and select “Curves” (or press F7).

This is a great way to color balance your images. With Curves, you can desaturate colors or desaturate and sharpen at the same time. For example, by desaturating your image, you may notice the whites look brighter. You can desaturate colors to make your image look more vibrant.

Click on the “Layers” menu and select “Adjustment”.
