Adobe Illustrator is a vector illustration package. Vector images are created as two-dimensional images based on mathematical formulas rather than pixels. Vector images can be scaled and made to appear crisp and sharp in any media — on posters, on Web sites, and on products such as T-shirts.

Unlike Adobe’s earlier product called PageMaker, Illustrator includes specialized tools for creating files for the Web. You can create Flash animations, animation sprites, and HTML templates using Illustrator. The program has excellent support for the Web, and it comes with an extensive library of premade tools and assets.

Illustrator makes it easy to create and format line, polygon, text, shape, and object-based objects. It provides tools to create custom shapes and to create path objects. These objects can be used to create artwork, to combine images with text or shapes, and to create illustrations, logos, and typography. Figure 4-6 shows a simple illustration created with Illustrator.

Illustrator’s Essential Training Kit 1 contains a library of prebuilt tools for creating line, shape, and character objects. Using these basic tools, you can create illustrations and lettering for use on Web sites or in print projects.

Illustrator Essentials kit 2 includes tutorials that guide you through creating colorless vector artwork. You can create line, polygon, and shape objects using the concepts learned in the first book.

Illustrator is perfect for beginning artists, educators, and students interested in graphics. It has a learning curve that is steep but manageable with a good tutorial book or a personal tutor.

_Photoshop For Dummies_ by John Wiley & Sons is a great and comprehensive book for learning Photoshop, but it’s not as strong as some of the Illustrator and Corel books that provide a complete tutorial for creating professional designs.

You can use the online filter to straighten images, adjust brightness and contrast, remove red eye, and create new images based on an old one.

How to Straighten a Stretched Photo in Photoshop

Photoshop Elements and Photoshop both include the “straighten” filter to fix crooked or tilted images. But in this post, we’ll show you how to use the filter in Photoshop.

In order to work, the image needs to be at least 720 pixels wide for the best results. Most smartphones like the iPhone or Galaxy Note are at least 1080 pixels, so you’ll be fine.

Another important tip is that if you need to straighten an image, you’ll want to place the filter on “Original” instead of “Image.” Placing the filter on “Image” will remove the original image and create a new one.

Step 1. Open the image in Photoshop. Click the “Image” button in the “Image” group on the main toolbar to load the original image. This step is necessary in case you want to undo the straightening process. Otherwise, you’ll lose your original image.

Save the image if you’d like, and close the image window.

Step 2. Select the “Straighten” filter from the “Filters” drop-down menu on the main toolbar. This is where you’ll adjust your new stretched image.

You’ll need to choose “Straighten” from the drop-down menu, then select the button with the little arrow on it. You’ll see a blue line stretch across the image. Click anywhere on this line to fix the image.

You can zoom in and out with the “Zoom” tool and you can pan the image around the canvas with the “Move” tool. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts to zoom in and out or pan to a specific part of the image.

Step 3. You’re done. That’s all there is to it. You can save the image if you’d like. If you haven’t saved the image, you’re done.

This process works with other filter options for normalizing images, but the “Straighten” filter is easiest to use.

Months after the American Pregnancy Association announced support for the Equal Rights Amendment, the Amendment still languished in a U.S. Senate committee. Was it dead?

On a recent Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his caucus took to the chamber’s floor in an effort to seize on several state-level anti-abortion bills currently working their way through various state legislatures. The effort was met with backlash across the nation, as the Republican majority in state legislatures tried to force nearly all provisions of the bill through.

Before the Senate moved on the issue, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment. Now, by contrast, a majority of the Republican senators on that committee appear to be ready to “bring up and send to the full Senate floor,” as Rachel told us on the Squawk Box market wrap.

The Congress passed the ERA in 1972 with support from overwhelming majorities of Democrats and Republicans. Now it is the sole focus of feminists who have long pushed for its approval.

“The plight of women has been described by many who have dedicated their lives to women’s rights, including Patty Stonesifer, who was the Executive Director of the National Women’s Political Caucus until she was defeated by one vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010,” Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN) wrote in The Huffington Post after the committee hearing. “Only once the country and women’s rights advocates had a chance to provide testimony under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Equal Rights Amendment was it placed on the Judiciary Committee’s agenda.”

And things look good for its approval.

McConnell, known as the “grim reaper” for his tactics to rid the Senate of any remaining Democratic seats, believes there is enough Republican support for the ERA to support a unanimous-consent vote of support on the floor of the Senate.

Saying that the $4 trillion stimulus bill that Obama signed today should help the economy, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., said it’s “going to be painful to make sure that it’s effective.”

Bayh told Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade that the country may have to endure a recession to prove the bill works. The bill was signed into law by Obama less than two months after Congress approved it.

“I think this whole debate surrounding the stimulus bill is premature,” said Bayh, who said it’s like “saying we should never fight a fire to save the house.”

“What’s been done is not only in our system, it’s in your system, it’s in your local community, it’s in your community where you have automobile companies that have just declared bankruptcy, they’re restructuring their business model.”

Bayh also said that the bill would help the average American.

“And I think people are going to find out that it will be painful to make sure that it’s effective. We’ll be reluctant to spend as much money as we have to. I think there will be a lot of pain. I think we’ll have to endure that.”
