Spend a long weekend at the Yellowstone Grand Canyon, fly down to Aspen, or do both – the choice is yours.

Perhaps two items would help promote the Southwestern USA “ideal vacation” – a pair of optimistic personalities. At the very least, that would be nice. Nonetheless, as previously stated in my blog for travel company Insight Vacations, in my opinion, both personality types must be combined, or the two individual views of the destination must be balanced, if not merged, to make a superior vacation. In this blog I will explore the differences between the optimistic and realist perspectives of two American destinations.

Let’s start with a little history.

Over the past 200 or so years, the Greater Yellowstone Area of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho has been the home to some very unique natural and cultural features. From the very early 1900s, European and American tourists to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton areas have told stories of the wonders of this area. One of the most fascinating features of the area was the hot springs and geysers north of Yellowstone. In the early 1900s, Venereal disease was a real problem for the developing industries of the US, especially where mining was involved. Many reports of men suffering from such diseases having been found and provided medical attention at the Yellowstone Hot Springs truly spooked the US government and brought it to the brink of having to appoint a disease regulating commission to oversee health issues.

1905 saw the demolition of all 14 bathhouses in the area to prevent the spread of VD. The demise of the bathhouses was a major event in the life of Yellowstone’s public baths. After the so called disease attack, in 1908, Yellowstone’s concessionaire began to install indoor toilets. The public was not pleased with these indoor facilities and many are believed to have vandalized the toilets as a form of protest. Although they were shut down, such criticism, threats, and vandalism continued in 1913. By this time indoor restrooms had won the approval of the public, and indoor baths were re-installed in the same year.

There were 31 different commercial facilities offering health-promoting facilities in the hot pools in 1902.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Yellowstone officials tried a variety of different marketing strategies, and in 1926 they had the help of the movies, especially the movie From the hot pools to you, which was about the area and at that point boasted of the rugged beauty of the area. Popular success of
