Download El Universo Organizado Latest version for MacThe present invention relates to electrochemical cells and more particularly to alkaline electrochemical cells having a separator between the anode and cathode which is permeable to oxygen gas but impermeable to electrolyte.
In U.S. Pat. No. 3,625,889, there is described an electrochemical cell having a cathode in contact with a zinc plate separator having both pores and openings therein which admit oxygen gas to the cathode. The pores are at least partly filled with solid electrolyte material which may be alkaline material in contact with a zinc anode, or which may be hydroxide material or an oxide of a metal of the alkaline series.
In cells of this type, the electrolyte material undergoes considerable volume expansion as it comes into contact with the anode material. The solid electrolyte material is held in place by a polymeric cellophane separator and the cell, when assembled and sealed, is assembled in a plastic mold having the anode in one part of the mold and the cathode in another part, with the separator interposed between the anode and cathode. The mold cavity is preferably filled with a liquid plastic composition which adheres and seals the cell parts together. After assembly and sealing of the cell, the mold is removed and the final operation includes the removal of the plastic from the cells. The liquid plastic composition consists of a polymer which becomes gel-like after contact with the electrolyte solution, including the cell sealing operation. After removal of the plastic material from the cells, the latter are ready for transport to the consumer.
In some applications of electrochemical cells it is desirable that the cells have a pressure rating greater than 1,000 psi, with the highest cell rating being 1,200 psi. This means that when the cells are sealed in the final packaging operation, the container will be completely filled with cells. In some applications, it is important that the cells have a gas impervious seal. This is particularly true when the cells are used in closed systems, such as a home oxygen generator. In such a system, the cathode material is exposed to atmospheric air. The cells must be gas impermeable in order to maintain a low oxygen concentration in the final product.
In the past, the problems of gas impermeability and cell stress-rupture have been encountered in conjunction with electrochemical cells having an impervious membrane in contact with the cathode. For example

THE CURRENT ALASKAN PARK SWIMMING POOL
In 1924, Seattle’s Department of Water and Power built this, and many other park pools throughout the city. The pools were part of the city’s “Sunshine Program,” which, with it’s interesting premise, aimed to make swimming accessible to more citizens, especially school-aged children.
This pool has always been a favorite park pool of mine. The original pool was constructed from bricks.
Now it’s surrounded by a new concrete and steel structure, which has led to a mixed reaction of excitement,
