After
one year in the business of planning the construction of the Government
Budget, this is the time when quite rightly, the public sector is about
to start looking at areas where it can try to save money. When the
Government published it’s budget for May 2011, it committed to a number
of rather large budget cuts.

For
the year 2011/12, the Government allowed departments to cut their budget
by between one-and-a-half and five per cent, and they have now decided
to cut the cumulative total by another two and a half per cent.

In
the case of the civil services, the Government decided in May to cut
twenty-one thousand staff (or 7 per cent), and to curtail the recruitment
to the Workforce Fund to £1.4 billion (8 per cent).

The
Government has also decided to
cut expenditure in the planned new housing programme from £22 billion
to £17 billion.

It also
increases the sanctions for people who do not take up their state benefits.

The
Government should be one of the first Government departments in the
country to benefit from this savings drive and should be looking to
retro-engineer many of its departments, making people and the Government
more efficient in the process.

Of course
how these savings will translate into better services for the public
is the big question.

But
the interesting point for the public sector is how efficient the public
service can be with even these minor reductions in expenditure – and
the more we can improve efficiency, the more improvements we will make
to the public service.

A
quick look at the different public bodies shows just how much of the
£8.3 billion was invested in frontline services.

The
most visible example of this is with the NHS –
local areas spent £7.6 billion on frontline services (as
percentage of their budget), 83 per cent, vs the total £35.2
billion spent by the NHS nationwide, 54 per cent. The key theme
here is that costs aren’t the only things that can be cut in the NHS.

It is generally recommended to not use Debug.Log(message) in the editor. I understand the reason for this but is there any possibility to use it in the editor?
For example
