A 2016 survey conducted by the Manufacturing Institute indicates that CAD is used in manufacturing for nearly 100% of machine shops, and roughly two-thirds of all machinists. Files
Many CAD files are archived as DXF, the only “archival format” for AutoCAD. The file format of the drawings is important because the computer does not know how to interpret the information in the file and simply “reads” the information. When these drawings are printed in a book, a PDF is produced from the file so that the content can be read when it is printed.
Originally the drawing file format was ASCII text format. However, with the release of AutoLISP and AutoCAD Architecture in the 1990s and the use of powerful text editors, the use of the file format for ASCII text became more and more obsolete. The advent of widely used word processors and the increasing ability to create documents in the popular Microsoft word format led to the replacement of the ASCII text format in AutoCAD with the DXF format.
DXF is a raster graphics format. Although it shares many attributes with vector graphics, it is still fundamentally a raster format.
In addition, drawing files contain other information in the header, so-called basic drawing information. This information is used by the drawing system and many application plug-ins to process the drawing in a meaningful way. The main types of basic drawing information are the name of the drawing, the type of the drawing, the number of entities and the number of notes.
