Nonlinear System Tools (NST) is a tool for writing branching fiction in a way that enables readers to make their own decisions and shape the story.
Every story is written and read in NST’s own custom-made files. The stories themselves consist of two parts, and they can each be read in their own way as well. The reader can choose to play with or without the editor.
In the player mode, the story works like a Choose Your Adventure book. Every time the player clicks a link, the story branch. It’s like running a pen and paper RPG where the choices you make have consequences. The choices can lead to one of a number of different endings.
In the editor mode, the story can be modified, extended and added to. The game can be played like a visual novel and has a visual narrative engine for all the branches.
All but one of the branching stories in this game will use the English language. I will add more languages in the future if the community can help me with this. About Languages Currently Available:

Japanese Chinese Italian
All other languages are purely conceptual. (Expensive program.)

What Is Inside

The Editor The editor can be used for writing both stories, with or without the reader. It’s also used for the visualisation of stories.The Reader The reader runs in the browser. The visualisation of the stories is done using the “render components” (picture above). There are dozens of them available, all with their advantages and disadvantages. If you want to make your own components, it should not be too hard to do. Most of the components currently available are simple sheets with images in them.

Does It Work in Chromium?
Yes, the source code for the editor is entirely open-source.
Can I run movies and audio with it?
In theory, yes. In reality, I have no idea if this works and it is not my intention to write a GUI for this yet.

What is currently available
At the time of writing, NST can do the following:
Simple 2D drawings of states and properties.
Templates for use with any state and/or property.
Storybook, which is like a blueprint, a UI, and a game all in one.
StoryBook.It is currently in alpha stage, and the editors tend to crash a lot, and when they do, it takes a lot of effort to get them fixed.

    You reach out to the nearest dog. Apparently, it’s a toothless
    carcass. Taken care of, you turn your attention to the giant urchin
    that has just appeared. Must be something you could pawn at the
    local rum shop.

    You leap at a nearby wooden soldier, but it seems to be mostly
    empty. The Roc, you cannot say no to.

    In the end, you get … the… Evil Crow from the Figurine Crafters.

    The space station may become unstable and crash. If it does, you will die. You must search for clues and survive on your own.

    What’s New in This Version:

    More Missions:

    – Aliens On Ghost Ship: The ghost ship was completely empty. This time, I was the only one.
    – Short Flights: Cradle-18 was manned by the crew of the Solar 6. The supply ship was expected back and they wanted to search for the missing pilot.
    – Under The Surface: There were no existing holes in the hull, and it was impossible to get inside the ship. Cradle-18 was stable, but no one was there. I started to search for clues.
    – Crash Landing: I took the wrong ramp and landed on a planet. The ship is unstable and I can’t leave. That’s all that I know.
    – Space Emergency: I woke up in the middle of space. I have no idea why the space station isn’t working properly. Perhaps there is a malfunction.
    – Escape: I woke up in a prison cell. There is another prisoner and the doors are locked. I must escape.
    – Ghost Ship: I woke up in a prison cell. There is another prisoner. I must escape before he notices me.
    – Deja Vu: I woke up in the middle of space. There is a crew member who wants to help.
    – Crash Landing: I woke up in a prison cell. There is another prisoner. I must escape before he notices me.
    – Alone: There is nobody on the ship. I must explore the ship from one compartment to the next to find what happened.

    – The game mechanics are not rigid, and you can do almost everything. For example, you can make Adam answer other peoples questions if you dont have enough time to do something. You can interact with objects (place a piece of music on the desk, touch a door, etc), or store some object. Also, you can return to the beginning of the game.
    – You can activate alarms to get some security support and explore the world at once.
    – In the current version you can block sounds, but they were planned to remove this feature, which will make the gameplay more pleasant.
    – Apart from Adam, you can choose your character. The player can change the appearance and choose the gender.
    – You can visit rooms that are not supposed to be accessible to you. But the light plays an important role there. When you visit those, you need to use an emergency light to see through the darkness.
    – The story takes place in alternative reality. You can visit the same places in different versions. For example, in some places you can find a comfortable chair by the house, and in the other version, these places are virtually useless.
    – The number of rooms is variable. The game can be played in different ways.
    – The level design is quite complex, so several games will take your time to discover the game layout.
    – The game is filled with non-linear story. At the beginning you will only need to solve a few puzzles to progress, and the rest of the game will evolve in different ways. The game also contains several endings.
    – The game takes place in St. Louis (USA). In the current version, except for a few places, you can explore the world on foot.
