INTRODUCTION TO
ENGINEERING ECONOMICS BY
RIGGS AND WEST
¶1 A large part of the economics literature is concerned with the relationships between the design of products and what consumers will buy. Most researchers and practitioners come to this issue by first trying to understand the science of economics. Often, they attempt to persuade policy makers of the value of their proposals. This is why engineering economics includes both economics and engineering.
Most of engineering economics is taken up with practical applications. Typically, but not exclusively, designers try to understand what consumers will buy. Practitioners also come to this issue by considering the policies that they would like to see adopted.
Part of the appeal of engineering economics is that it allows academics and practitioners to separate their macroeconomic analyses from the more science-based microeconomic analyses. Since the early 1960s, when the US task force on economic engineering began work, the number of people in the engineering disciplines who were studying engineering economics has multiplied. This trend has continued and now many universities have undergraduate engineering departments with significant majors in economics. The numbers of people studying engineering economics, however, still remain a tiny fraction of the total number of graduate students in any engineering discipline. Similarly, the number of people employed in the design of products and services has grown to a large degree since the early 1960s. Since engineering economics began its growth in the mid-1960s, about 1.5 million people have been directly employed by firms in the US alone in engineering. This number has grown to about 3 million jobs. What has also grown is the number of engineering people who are engaged in product and service design.

All the problems that engineers face and all the policies that they want to enact usually have an economic dimension. Several books on managerial economics, and some of the articles that are included in these books are now available on the Internet. Since almost all of the articles that are collected in these books have their origins in engineering economics, we have included a bibliography of the books and articles on managerial economics. These references show that there has been a substantial increase in the number of researchers dealing with engineering economics. In addition, engineers in service operations have been making some important contributions to this area.
The findings of engineering economists and those of other researchers are presented in the pages of this book. Studies of what consumers will buy fall into three categories. The first can be characterized as a division of labor-type economics. This group of researchers asks the question

Meningitis continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. The etiologic agents vary greatly and the manifestations and treatment of patients can be very different. A literature review was conducted using MEDLINE from the National Library of Medicine for the years 2000-2007. Only articles related to blunt and penetrating head trauma that involved evaluation of the CSF and meningitis or meningitis-like signs and symptoms of patients with potential of brain injury were chosen. Etiologic agents were divided into group A, B and C, and further subdivided into aerobic, anaerobic and fungi. The most common agents identified, whether associated with blunt or penetrating head trauma were group A Streptococcus, meningococcus, and Escherichia coli. Agents in Group B included Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The third category (Group C) included Candida species, Staphylococcus aureus, and other organisms of lesser importance. Meningitis and meningitis-like infection in the setting of head trauma are a major diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The varied presentations and etiologic agents can be a major diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Though the mortality of head trauma has been significantly reduced, the prognosis of head trauma cases with meningitis still remains devastating.Drug-induced lung disease: a problem in asthma and nonasthma.
Drug-induced lung disease is a major worldwide problem, affecting all patient groups. It accounts for approximately 12-15% of admissions to intensive care units and is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. The leading cause of drug-induced lung disease is the anti-inflammatory, inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) fluticasone. Unfortunately, as this drug has become more widely used, there have been growing concerns about its long-term safety. Review the current state of knowledge regarding the potential adverse effects of ICS on
