We studied the cortisol response to a standardized stressor in human milk from mothers of term infants and found a substantial, 1-h lasting increase in cortisol. Salivary cortisol, cortisol in blood, and cortisol in urine showed the same kinetic profile, i.e., peak 1-2 h post stressor (median (range), 16.8 (4.8-19.6) ng/dL vs. 9.5 (2.4-22.4) ng/dL vs. 8.6 (2.9-14.3) ng/mL).
