The Workflow package generator is for the development of Workflows for SharePoint 2010. It is a must have tool for all developers that want to contribute to SharePoint, but also for those that want to create their own Workflows. One important feature of the generator is that it is optimized for both.NET 2.0/3.5, Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2013. To run the generator, you need to be using Visual Studio 2013 Premium (so not Express or Community) and be updated to the latest Service Pack of Visual Studio 2013. You can run this in both 32-bit and 64-bit.

What is a workflow package?
Workflow packages are composed of one or more activities. An activity represents a series of steps performed when workflow runs. You can choose to implement an activity as a simple step or as a custom workflow activity. A step is a self-contained activity that represents a single piece of workflow functionality, such as a function that runs when a work item is assigned to a specific workflow. You can run, debug, or script the implementation of a step by dragging the activity into the Visual Studio Workflow Designer toolbar.A workflow activity represents a self-contained, reusable workflow component that works with items or data sources to perform a user-defined task. You can choose to implement an activity as a simple activity or as a custom activity. Custom activities function as an encapsulated workflow component that executes workflows and or processes the flow of data items between workflow activities. The actions of the workflow interact with SharePoint for the runtime execution of the activity or process data flow.
When a workflow package is activated, SharePoint sends an event to each activity in the package. Use these events in your code to direct workflow execution to other activities.
Workflow Packages are stored in the document library. The file extension of each package is WM. Once created in the document library, they can be viewed, activated, and configured from both the web portal and the SharePoint client application. Once created, you can deploy these packages to other SharePoint web applications.
You can define workflow packages in terms of both the workflow definitions and the activities. You can also deploy workflow packages to the SharePoint document library. To deploy a package, choose File > Deploy and specify the package name. Both WebPart and Document Library workflows can be deployed. If the workflow is deployed to the document library, it will be activated as a document library workflow. An active workflow package is shown in the SharePoint document library.

For those who don’t know about Microsoft Workflow Package Generator (WPG), this is a command line tool for generating an XML package called workflow content file which can be executed by Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010.
Workflow Package Generator can be downloaded here as a console application, ZIP archive from the author’s website or you can install it by following the instructions here.
The wpgconsole.vb script described below can be run in two modes, either to generate a workflow package as a local file for offline use or to generate a published package in a SharePoint site for online usage.

Basic User Interface Description:
The user interface for the tool consists of a set of GUI elements which the user can manipulate.
Icons:
The application has a set of Icons with associated tool tips which help the user to understand the function of the different GUI elements.
Main Form:
There is a main form with a context-sensitive tool bar, ribbon and tab control.
Tool Bar:
The tool bar is context-sensitive and when the user hovers over a function button of the tool bar, the tool tip associated to this button is shown.

Maybe you’ve had a lengthy email conversation with your boss about what has to happen, what has to be changed and what the workflow should look like. Maybe you’ve got some customers on the phone trying to pick the workflow, or maybe the end user got really, really scared when they’re just beginning the definition. All of these scenarios can be a real pain point for a SharePoint administrator, but in the end the user will be happy about the result, right? Yeah. This was the idea behind this application.
Before creating the application, we first thought about what the typical workflow definition needs are:
– A Workflow Center configuration.
– A Workflow definition.
– Workflow Activities.
When we came to the conclusion that this was the typical scenario, we also came to the conclusion that we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel when it comes to this scenario, which made the decision for us. So we started to look into technologies to create a solution. And, as you may know, when it comes to Microsoft Office we have a lot of documentation about how to create the different parts and components within SharePoint. But we were looking for ways to assemble everything together. That’s why we got in contact with the team behind the awesome Visual Studio Tools for Office Power Tools. It’s a nice story, we thought about assembling it all together and then decided to turn it into a free Visual Studio 2008 Power Pack, the one that adds the SharePoint Support to the toolbox, which contains a lot of features, that together were developed by the team from Visual Studio Power Tools.
