Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the invasion and metastasis of many types of solid tumors. In the present study, we evaluated the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in human medulloblastoma and the effect of neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) on the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9. MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression was detected in three different types of human medulloblastoma (Group 1: classic; Group 2: desmoplastic; Group 3: medulloblastoma with metastases) and in four other types of human brain tumors (Glioblastoma multiforme, anaplastic astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and glioblastoma). MMP-2 and MMP-9 were expressed in both the neoplastic and the nonneoplastic areas of the desmoplastic medulloblastoma, as well as in the tumors with metastases. Immunostaining for MMP-2 and MMP-9 was more intense in the nonneoplastic than in the neoplastic areas of the classic and desmoplastic medulloblastoma. These findings suggest that the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in medulloblastoma is related to its differentiation.
